3rd Aug to 06th Aug
The Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Weekend takes place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, Aug 3rd–5th 2012.
Battling the Beast
Following the success of the Beast of Ballyhoura over the last 5 years we are proud to announce that the Beast is back for 2012. We have a few changes this year with the most notable change being that of the experienced team from Causeway Coast Adventure Racing Club taking on the planning of the event and running it in association with Ballyhoura Development Limited. An exciting new route awaits offering lots of challenges along some of Irelands highest mountain ranges, most beautiful rivers and taking in some of Irelands finest historical and heritage sites. Are you ready to meet the Beast?
The event features the Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race, a uniquely Irish 36 hour non-stop race across the ancient & magical surroundings of counties Cork, Limerick & Tipperary. Mixed teams of four mountain run, bike, kayak, abseil, orienteer & shoot, navigating the best route to win. Prepare to meet your demons during this event designed to push each team to their limits. The Beast of Ballyhoura incorporates the 6 All Ireland Inter Services Challenge to unearth Irelands toughest service men and women.
The Ballyhoura Blitz will take place on Saturday Aug 4th 2012. In the past the Blitz has been race is designed for individuals but new for 2012 you’ll also be able to enter as a pair. So if you’re looking to gain some experience in adventure racing this may well be the race for you. We still need to get down to the area and plan the race route but we expect it to cover a distance of approx. 60km consisting of a 12km hill running, 46km of mountain biking on the world class Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails and maybe a short kayak section if we can work it into the route. The race will involve some adventure terrain, a little bit of very basic orienteering & competitors should be prepared to get wet. All in all the Blitz should offer a good introduction to the sport of adventure racing.

‘To the people of the Ballyhoura region – every time we encountered a local they were full of questions and praise for us, without their support and cooperation we would not have been able to race across some of the most spectacular scenery in the country and they all must be thanked for allowing us access to their lands’’

Yet again the Ballyhouras area has delivered more great gems of discovery along the route of the Beast. For sure it is a magical place with warm and welcoming locals that we will be back to visit again and enjoy at a somewhat more leisurely pace perhaps.
